The F2 car is powered by an Audi 1.8 litre turbo engine with a target 400bhp on standard boost and 450bhp on overboost. The engines on all cars will have identical power within 1.5% of the target. The overboost facility is actuated by a steering wheel button which increases maximum power by 50bhp for a duration as specified on the set-Up sheet, typically six seconds. Overboost may not be used except in the second practice session and in each of the races, when the number of shots will be specified on the set-up sheet but typically eight shots are available for races and four available for tests.

The engine is a new turbocharged unit based on the Audi 1.8 litre 20 valve block and head, as used in Formula Palmer Audi. Whereas the engine in the FPA car uses standard road car components pretty much throughout, the F2 engine has been developed as a pure race engine. The crankshaft, con rods, pistons, valves and camshafts are all new components designed for high strength and light weight.The dry sump system has been re-designed so the engine sits 35mm lower than in the FPA car.

The 1.8-litre turbo-charged Audi engine that will power each Formula Two car next season has undergone a successful dyno test at Mountune Racing's headquarters.
A dynamometer or 'dyno' test measures the torque and rotational speed produced by an engine, which generates the power needed to drive the vehicle.
The F2 engine reached its 450bhp overboost power target and tests will now continue to measure its reliability and endurance at this power level and the race power of 400bhp. Overall, the engine will be able to rev up to 8500rpm.
