MAGNET Triple-stacked strontium ferrite magnets with a total weight of 305 oz. (9 kg) drive the SPL-X4 woofers to earth-shaking levels.
CONE AND SURROUND The SPL-X4 series features highly flexible compound cones containing synthetic Nomex fiber that are manufactured using a special proprietary process. The new cone is light for fast peak response, yet extremely stiff to handle the enormous forces of acceleration when operating at SPL contest levels. The surrounds of the SPL-X4 woofers consist of polyether – a light, elastic, temperature-resistant material ideally suited to handle the extreme excursions of the SPL drivers. The cone and surround are stitched together for extra strength.
SPIDERS While other woofers may do with one or two spiders at the most, the SPL drivers feature no less than four laminated Nomex spiders. The spiders in a 2 x 2 mirrored arrangement on a spacer guarantee absolutely linear action of the moving system, the mirrored configuration effectively canceling out mechanical suspension non-linearities. The improved load distribution on the suspension with the progressive spider characteristics on top, increase the mechanical power-handling capacity by a good margin.
VOICE COIL The large
3.5” dual voice coils with 2 x 2 ohms nominal impedance are the foundation of the enormous power handling that this woofer line has to offer. The coils feature black anodized alu-minum former material with copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW) wound in four layers. CCAW reduces the mass of the voice coil significantly while maintaining its power-handling capacity, increasing the driver’s efficiency and permitting the use of a thicker, extremely rigid cone.
The voice coil former is reinforced above the coil windings for increased mechanical strength. The coil is sealed externally with thermally conductive black epoxy resin to distribute the waste heat generated in the kW range as evenly as possible. The center pole has lateral vents for improved cooling. It also features a copper Faraday ring to suppress eddy currents for lower distortion. The result: heavy loads cause less cone flex and thus greater precision at lowered distortion.
POLE PIECES AND CENTER POLE Special FEA/FEM software was used to optimize these assemblies. Due to their size and thickness, the pole pieces could not be manufactured with the usual cold-rolling process, but were CNC machined from solid stock. The space below the dustcap is cooled and vented by a large central core port in the rear pole piece and additional lateral cooling channels. Circular ports vent the external space between the magnet and voice coil.
BASKET DESIGN Die-cast aluminum baskets provide a solid base for the hardcore magnet drives. The baskets have plenty of space between the spider landing area and the basket bottom to accommodate enormous cone excursions.The other features of the basket are also geared toward high power. Large screened openings in the basket behind the spider provide excellent air circulation for effective voice coil cooling under extreme conditions. Distortion resulting from compression effects at high levels is therefore also a thing of the past.
The 1 ohm impedance of the SPLs (with both voice coils hooked up in parallel) makes the SPL-X4 drivers ideal for SPL power amps that are optimized for 1 ohm. The new SPL woofers have been optimized for ported applications and maximum sound pressure levels, but can also be installed in sealed and bandpass boxes.
