The GM Precept is a result of GM's involvement in the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), a joint effort between the US Government and the domestic auto industry that began in 1993. It is a five passenger, full size family sedan that is being developed in two versions to explore the potential for alternative fuel vehicles.
The first system uses hybrid technology which is a small direct-injection internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels combined with electric motors that drive the front wheels. This is an interim or near term solution that will allow the car to achieve 80 mpg while providing performance comparable to today's full size cars.
The second system is the interesting one for the long term. It uses fuel cell technology that will allow this large sedan to achieve over 100 mpg in a car that will go from 0 to 60 in under 10 seconds, have a 500 mile range and be capable of speeds over 120 mph.
Fuel cell technology takes fuel, in this case hydrogen, and passes it through a membrane that converts the energy in the fuel directly into electricity that is used to power electric motors for propulsion. The byproduct of this process is water making this a zero emissions vehicle.
