7. PERMANENT DRAG STRIP CONCEPTION
The dimensions and slope of the drag strip are the critical
measurements and are dependent on the classes of competition
for which the drag strip is intended.
The considerations in this Article are intended to be of assistance
in the basic conception of drag strip projects for submission to the
FIA in view of future licensing. In those countries where the law
demands it, those responsible for a drag strip must ensure that
the prescriptions laid down by the public authorities are complied
with and must obtain their offi cial approval.
7.1 Width:
The width of the track and shutdown area should not be less than
50 feet (15.2 m). New facilities should not be less than 60 feet
(18.5 m). Should the drag strip widen or narrow, the transition
must be made as gradually as possible.
7.2 Length of the competition area:
7.2.1 If the drag strip is intended for FIA Championships, the length
of the track should be 1/4 mile between the start line and the
fi nish line, plus at least 30 feet (9.1 m) before the start line.
For 1/8 mile events the length of the track should be 1/8 mile
between the start line and the fi nish line, plus at least 30 feet
(9.1 m) before the start line. Final determination of braking area
to be determined by inspector on track licensing.
7.2.2 - Braking areas:
These areas, and in particular the fi nal braking distances, will be subjected to the requirements laid down by the FIA inspector, and
their design features will be noted on the track license.
7.3 Longitudinal profi le:
The maximum rise or fall of any track should be 1 %.
7.4 Transversal incline:
The transversal incline between the two edges of the track
and shutdown area, or between the center-line and the edge
(camber), shall not exceed 2 %.
7.5 Surface:
Track: smooth fl at surface of recognized roadbase construction
hot mix, concrete, or approved sealed bitumen surface.
Shoulders and irregular joints are not permitted. All edges must
be satisfactorily blended.
Primary Braking Area: must be of a sealed surface similar to that
used for the Track.
Emergency Braking: sealed surface, grass, sand or gravel, of
an even texture.
Tolerances: the aim should be a maximum of 6 mm (1/4 inch)
in any 33 feet (10 m) distance, for the Track and the Primary
Braking Area.
7.6 Strip Markings:
The track boundaries and the centerline must be clearly marked
with a white or yellow line at least 4" (100 mm) wide. The speed
traps should be marked with diagonal lines, before and on the
fi nish line.
7.7 Return Road / Turnoffs:
The Return Road should be a minimum of 10 feet (3 meters)
in width, with suitable access to Pit and Staging Lane areas. It
should be sealed so that all vehicles may use it at all times.
Exit points from the Braking Area should be sealed, and shaped
to accommodate the turning circles of the longest vehicles. The
recommended width at the track edge is 30 feet (9.2 meters)
blending into the Return Road Width.
It is recommended that a minimum of two exits be placed
between a point approximately 1,000 feet (300 m) beyond the
fi nish line and the end of the braking area. Access for emergency
vehicles is of the utmost importance.
