Totusi sa nu-i neglijam.

As the pioneer of four-wheel-drive technology, Audi set a benchmark as early as 1980 with the presentation of the quattro coupe. The numerous successes that ensued on rally courses and circuits around the world testify to the efficiency of this superior drive concept.

The dominant victories with the “original quattro” in the World Rally Championship, during the 1980s, were an important factor in the market success of quattro drive and clearly demonstrated that the company slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik” should be taken at face value.

Historians seem not certain who invented four wheel drive for cars. Somehow the history of 4WD is not well recorded. According to what I found on the internet, the first 4WD vehicle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche (yes, the founder of Porsche cars) for the Austrian truck manufacturer Jacob Lohner in 1900 (no typo).

The first vehicle in the history of 4WD had electric hub motors on each wheel - the engine powered a generator for power supply. Porsche was 25 years old when he designed the vehicle. By the way, NASA used the idea of electric wheel hub motors to put its lunar vehicle in motion, more

First mechanical 4WD (transfer case, drive shafts etc.) was built by the Dutch company Jacobus Spyker in 1902. Since the Lohner/Porsche four wheel drive has such an unusual status with its electric hub motors the Spyker is considered to be the world's first four wheel drive car.

The world's first automaker, Daimler Benz has a solid place in 4WD history as well. Mercedes started building 4WD vehicles 1903 - some of them already with all wheel steering

The first US four wheel drive vehicle, was built 1911 by the Four Wheel Drive auto company (FWD) . The company was formed by Zachow and Besserdich, and the latter was subsequently involved in forming a company that took its name from the town of Oshkosh and manufactured 4x4 trucks. FWD supplied 4x4 trucks to both the British and US armies during World War One

Mercedes and BMW introduced really sophisticated four wheel drive vehicles in 1926

Mercedes-Benz G5 four wheel drive vehicle

featuring full time 4WD, four wheel steering, three differential lockers, independent supension front and rear
Fulltime 4WD, 3 differentials, three differential locks, for wheel steering, independent suspension on all four wheels, I-4 with 48HP

The vehicle is very similar to the BMW 325 4x4 - not by accident. The German army had ordered all car manufacturers in 1933 to design a \"Einheits-Pkw mit Allradantrieb\" , a Uniform Passenger Car with 4WD. All manufacturers had to follow identical blueprints and technical layout.

Fulltime 4WD, 3 differentials, three differential locks, for wheel steering, independent suspension on all four wheels, I-6 with 50HP @ 4000 rpm.

The Subaru Leone made its entrance in June 1971, and the Subaru Leone 4WD Station Wagon followed in September 1972. Until then, four-wheel drives (4WD) was limited to off-road vehicles. Subaru broke that pattern by introducing the mass-produced 4WD variation in an ordinary passenger vehicle series. When the vehicle was first put on the market, demand came mainly as a result of the special applications the car could be used for, such as commercial use in snowy and mountainous areas. However, the car was highly praised in both the domestic and overseas markets for its originality. The vehicle had steadily broadened its customer base thanks to a surge in popularity of outdoor sports like skiing and fishing. The car's popularity snowballed to the point where it became the world's top-selling 4WD passenger car and the origin of the Subaru AWD.

The ECVT employs a simple yet effective mechanism using a special steel belt and pair of pulleys that are made by Van Doorne's Transmissie B.V., of the Netherlands. The ECVT enables the driver to control the car's speed without the use of complex gears. This configuration allows the vehicle to change speeds automatically to the most appropriate gear ratio. The intelligent continuously variable transmission (i-CVT), which was evolved from the ECVT, is now used in the domestic minicar Pleo.

The Subaru Justy was launched in February 1984. In 1987, the Justy was fitted with an advanced automatic transmission system: the world's first electro-continuously variable transmission called the Subaru ECVT

The time was 11 minutes and 56 seconds past 3:00 a.m., January 21, 1989. It was 447 hours, 44 minutes, and 9.887 seconds after the start. This was the moment when the Legacy outdid all automobiles by completing the 100,000-kilometer distance in the fastest time ever. What's more, this was a perfect accomplishment, with all three cars breaking the existing speed record by more than 10 km/h.
This attempt to break the world and international speed records was part of a competition officially recognized by the FIA and was conducted in compliance with the strict rules set down by the FIA. Further, the measuring instruments that calculated the automobile's speed and the people judging the attempt must have official FIA approval. The competition was supervised by the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States (ACCUS) and its subordinate organization, the United States Auto Club (USAC).

Here, we will take a look at the impressive records of Subaru cars that competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC), including the way they conquered the Manufacturers' championship three years in a row for 1995, 1996, and 1997. The WRC is a motorsport in which cars based on commercially available models vie with each other under a variety of conditions around the world, including paved, gravel, and icy/snowy roads. Subaru participates in the WRC because it wants to prove the potential of the cars built on the concept of \"Active Driving, Active Safety,\" and because it can collect and analyze valuable data from torturous driving conditions and feed the results back into its mass-produced vehicles. As the first Japanese manufacturer of automobiles to win the Manufacturers' championship three years in succession, Subaru will continue to tackle the WRC so that its cars can constantly evolve.
Subaru's full-scale participation in WRC events began with its entry in the 38th Safari Rally in 1990. In 1995, Subaru achieved overall wins in five of the eight WRC rallies, making Subaru the WRC manufacturers' champion for the year. Subaru also won the title in the following two years, achieving three straight WRC wins from 1995 to 1997. This was the first time for a Japanese automobile manufacturer to achieve this honor.
