China's Geely eyes Volvo

China's Geely Automotive said its parent wants to bid for Ford's Volvo unit, becoming the latest mainland automaker to chase a foreign brand.

The move could boost the small, home-grown car maker's profile and give it access to Volvo technology, although some analysts doubt it could manage an international brand.

Geely shares, which have trebled in the past year, rose in Hong Kong on Wednesday, already buoyed by a 145 percent jump in first-half profit announced last week.

Its holding group said it will make a bid with a government-backed investor, adding the consortium wants full ownership of the unit rather than a stake.

Ford is expected to make a decision on whether to sell the Swedish automaker within a month.
Geely, which once sold the cheapest cars in China, has been upgrading its models to tap China's increasingly affluent drivers and the fastest growing car market in the world.
Major Chinese automakers have attempted several overseas acquisitions in recent years with mixed results.
Only a little-known heavy machinery maker, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, has announced a significant overseas buy -- GM's premier off-road brand, Hummer.

si de ce ar fi veste proasta? vor aparea masini chinezesti mai sigure, ca au ce invata de la Volvo.

pt ca geely stim cu totii ce masini "minunate" fac. toata treaba e sa nu "chinezareasca" marca volvo, ci sa o imbunatateasca PASTRANDU-I IDENTITATEA, nu sa scoata copii dupa alte modele ale unor marci foarte cunoscute, cum obisnuiau sa faca pana acum. si chiar si niste viitoare copii mai avansate dpdv tehnologic decat acum tot ar fi degeaba. Va fi destul de greu pt geely, dat fiind faptul ca lupul isi schimba blana, dar naravul ba, dar si datorita lipsei lor de experienta la aceast nivel. "volvo is way out of their league", ca sa zic asa...
