STONE RACING TIME ATTACK CIVIC TYPE R
Not too many of us would consider an EP3 Civic Type R as a competitive option in a Time Attack series, considering the likely opposition of Lancer Evolution's, Impreza's, Skyline GT-R's etc. With 'just' two litres of normally aspirated power going to the front wheels, the EP3 would already be at a disadvantage to the more powerful four wheel drive competitors. Unfortunately for this years Pro Class competitors in the Irish Time Attack series at Mondello Park, Stone Racing is planning a few upsets ... The first image in this post was the car at it's debut event in 2008, at the first round of the Time Attack series. Unfortunately the engine developed a rattle and the car was forced to retire. The car reappeared at round two, with Brendan Stone at the wheel, it managed a 1:03.328, achieving first place in Club class and over four seconds faster than the second placed Nissan 200SX of Neil Dunne. For round three, Brendan and Stone Racing moved into Pro Class to compete for overall times, as their Club Class time at round two would have put them fourth in the Pro class at the same event. As the season moved on, Brendan got faster and faster, eventually finishing the last round with 1:01.187, earning him fourth place overall in the Pro Class, even with a round less competed than his rivals. For 2009, Stone Racing have put their EP3 on a serious diet whilst intensifying the rigidity of the shell. All the bodywork has been removed and the car has been reduced to a bare shell for it's 2009 rebuild. The target weight is circa 900kg's, down some 100kg's on the 2008 build. This will hopefully be achieved by utilising carbon fibre quarter panels and roof. The original chassis has been braced for extra cornering strength. The engine is being rebuilt by Trackday Performance with custom one off throttle bodies as the off the shelf ones would not be suitable for the high power output for this engine. Speaking to John Stone himself, he had this to say, 'I chose the Civic because it's different and it's a good chassis to start with. Four wheel drive turbo is too easy, if it's not fast enough just wind up the boost. Relying on power alone is not the way to build a good car, but a lot of people don't seem to understand this. Hopefully this year we can show people that fast cornering speed is where it's at.' He continues, 'Our aim last year was to get up to the times of the four wheel drive turbo cars and we did. We even beat most of them at some point during the season. We are aiming for 59's and hopefully when the car is setup 58's !' |
