If Darth Vader drove a supercar, the Bertone Mantide would surely be it! This shocking one-off is the creation of Italian design house Bertone, who stunned the Chinese crowds when it threw off the covers at the Shanghai Show this week.
Peel back the slashed and vented carbon-fibre bodywork and you’ll find a Corvette ZR1 underneath. But the Origami-inspired panels aren’t just to draw attention – its designers claim the new shape reduces air resistance and produces more downforce at high speed.
Sensibly, Bertone has left the ZR1’s incredible engine well alone - it’s still a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 producing 631bhp. But thanks to the extensive use of super light carbon-fibre in the bodyshell, performance has increased. The mantide’s 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds shades two tenths off the standard Corvette, while the top speed climbs by 12mph to 217mph.
Although there’s no word on price, this unique vehicle will be available to buy, and Bertone has confirmed that replicas can be produced if demand is sufficiently high.
STILE BERTONE has revealed the Bertone Mantide, previously teased under the Project M name. The Bertone Mantide is based on the 2009 Corvette ZR1 and will be unveiled at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este this year. A static model however has been presented at the Shanghai auto show.
The company says the Bertone Mantide is able to reach 62 mph from a stand still in 3.2 seconds and that it can go up to a top speed of 351 km/h (217mph). The Bertone Mantide is around 100 kg lighter and features FIA regulation triangulated roll cage, light-weight carbon fibber racing seats and 4pt racing harness.
The design of the Bertone Mantide has been influenced by Formula One and aerospace technology. The aerodynamics of the Bertone Mantide have been developed in the wind tunnel and the car has 25% (Cd 0.298) less drag.

The iconic theme is clear to see: a teardrop-like fuselage which tightly encases the mechanicals and the passenger cell which is embraced by two prominent wrapping aerodynamic appendages. When the folks at Stile Bertone decided to produce a new one-off supercar, they looked no further than the "King of the Ring" for underpinnings. But be warned, the Bertone Mantide is like no other Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 you've seen before.

Since it was conceived by the same design house that brought you the Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 11 Concept, the Mantide is rich in Italian design. Bertone took the Nürburgring-tuned chassis and fire-breathing 638-hp supercharged V-8 from the ZR1 and wrapped in a futuristic shell.

Bertone says the design was influenced by modern aerospace and the world of Formula 1. A teardroplike fuselage that looks as if it came from a jet fighter encases the occupants. Butterfly opening doors further the similarities, and the concept's body is covered in various air inlets and outlets said to maximize efficiency.

According to Bertone, the exterior design aspects of the car are all functional. The company fine-tuned the aerodynamic performance of the car in an advanced, full-scale wind tunnel. The concept features a flat floor derived from Le Mans prototypes as well as a diffuser and "flying buttresses." The aero bits work together to increase efficiency, reduce drag, and apply greater levels of downforce. Also, carbon fiber was used for all body panels, interior trim, seats and even the wheels. The outcome is a weight savings of 220 pounds.

As a result, the Mantide achieves even greater levels of performance than the mighty ZR1. The 0-to-62-mph time is reportedly reduced to just 3.2 seconds and top speed rises to 217 mph. To ensure that the Mantide is stable and safe, Bertone incorporated a FIA regulation roll cage and carbon-fiber racing seats with four-point harnesses.

Sadly, as we mentioned before, the Mantide is a one-off concept. Alas, hopefully Bertone will at least bring the concept over to U.S. as it has with its concepts in the past. That way we can drool over it in person.

mai este un concept bertone impreuna cu un alt designer, care impreuna au realizat un autobuz electric fara a fi nevoie de un om ca sa il conduca.

Bertone Mantide, cea mai nouă creaţie a casei italiene de design Bertone, ar putea fi construită īn 10 exemplare.

Designerul şef de la Bertone, Jason Castriota, a declarat că "...există un interes considerabil īn īntreaga lume şi am fost contactaţi de potenţiali clienţi din Asia, Europa şi America." Īn cazul īn care Mantide va fi produs īntr-o serie limitată, acesta nu va fi deloc ieftin, Castriota precizānd că preţul său va fi de aproximativ 2 milioane dolari.

Noul Bertone Mantide are la bază modelul Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 īnsă vine cu o serie de īmbunătăţiri faţă de supercarul american. Coeficientul aerodinamic a fost redus cu 25%, iar forţa de apăsare a crescut cu 30%. Īn plus, prin utilizarea īn exces a fibrei de carbon, noul concept este şi mai uşor cu 100 kg. Astfel, performanţele au crescut şi ele: Bertone Mantide accelerează de la 0 la 100 km/h īn doar 3.2 secunde iar viteza maximă este de 351 km/h.

Noul Bertone Mantide a debutat oficial īn cadrul Salonului Auto de la Shanghai dar a fost expus şi la Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.
