Honda Accord Type R
[June 2003]
I bought a Honda Accord Type R in November 2001 and it has been perfect with no problems - until Saturday 10 May 2003. My partner and I heard a whoosh and the blinds lit up orange as the car went up in flames. We called the Fire Service and the Police - and I am Leading Firefighter in the Service working at the same station as the crew attending.
I got the crew to check the car out and it was obvious that the cause was an electrical fault that started under the bonnet either on the wiring harness or the relay box. The whoosh and the full fire glow was the windscreen breaking and the combustible gases igniting when escaping from the passenger compartment.
On getting back to the station I asked the Leading Firefighter who attended what the cause was - he said it was definitely electrical.
On 11 May I informed the supplying dealer about the car, that I thought it was an electrical fault which caused the fire and that it was a warranty issue with the car being only 19 months old. They agreed to take the car back to look it over and advised that the car was a write off.
Then I was told I would have to go through the insurance, as for it to be a warranty issue I would have to prove the part that failed and caused the fire. But the fire had damaged the parts, making it impossible to isolate the faulty one.
Now I am having to reluctantly take this through the insurance as nothing has been forthcoming from Honda UK or the supplying dealer - not even a courtesy car whilst an investigation takes place.

Honda S2000
I have an S2000 that has a mind of its own. My car is on a 52-plate and has never worked correctly since new - so far it has had a new cat followed by a new ECU and then a new engine.
I have now got it back from the Honda dealer with a dent and electrical problem. I am now losing interest in the car and feel I have no way of getting justice.

onda Accord Tourer (2004)
[May 2004]
I bought my new Accord Tourer 2.4 Executive (auto) in January and the problems started almost immediately. The first one was the car shunting. Going along at speed (30-70 mph), at constant throttle, the car 'stuttered' for no reason.
I took the car to the dealer, who spoke to Honda UK. They decided to put on an ECU monitor. When the car shunts, I push a green button and a mass of readings from the ECU are stored for later analysis. Unfortunately, the readings collected were downloaded incorrectly and lost and so I had to go back to have the monitor put on again.
In the meantime, the front driver and passenger windows started making loud creaking noises from 5 mph upwards. The dealer agrees that the noises are 'terrible' and has tried lubricating one of the window seals. This didn't work. I've never had a car make noises like this, so I have investigated the problem on the web.
It turns out a Japanese Tourer owner had reported this noise to Honda Japan, which has been working on a solution for over a year. Apparently, newly designed seals are now available there and I have mentioned this to my dealer (and printed out the part numbers for him). The UK standard replacement ones have not worked.
The final diagnosis for the shunting is a faulty ignition relay, though the monitor has been left on the car to take more readings just in case there are other factors involved. Now the car has also started to emit a continuous, loud screeching noise from either the front wheels or underneath the car itself. I certainly drew some attention from a pub crowd and neighbours as I screeched past.
Honda has always had a reputation for reliability and quality, but this car tells a different story. I must have been back to the dealer six or seven times now and more rattles appear almost every day. I'm beginning to think that the interior trim is held together with paper clips.
